I read today’s book in the beginning of this year. It really helped me with my creative process, and also inspired me to stay consistent with posting my reflections online:

Find your artistic voice” by the artist Lisa Congdon is a very practical guide on how to stay true to your creative self, hone your artistic skills, and constantly improve.

The main idea of this book is quite simple: creative thinking happens in most people. However, what differentiates productive artists from the rest is that they constantly do something. They put themselves “out there” — despite the imposter syndrome or feeling like they are not ready.

To find your artistic voice (or means of your artistic expression), you need to work on these elements: style, skill, subject matter, medium of publishing, and consistency.

You work on all those elements by consistently practicing, setting your routines, and showing up. With our busy schedules (and especially if you have work and other commitments), it is easy to find excuses as to not to create. However, without showing up and practicing, you will not find your voice and your creative ideas will stay just that, ideas.

My publishing here on Medium is exactly that: consistently showing up, sharing my ideas and doodles on two things I really like, books and beers.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lisa: I am figuring my personal voice and style by publishing, and publishing only.

It is not an abstract question (“How creative am I? What is my voice?”). Instead, it is a very practical exercise, and I can only figure it out by actively doing something.

I am excited where my creative posting journey will take me, and I am willing to put in the work. I appreciate Lisa Congdon’s practical guidance with this book, and I hope you do give this book a try if these ideas resonate with you.

You might know that I only publish book reviews together with beer recommendations. Books and beers, some of my favorite things.

I have been living in Scotland for a few months now, and I keep exploring very versatile Scottish beers. Today’s beer is Hula Hula Fruited Pale Ale by a Dundee based brewery. It was pretty good and smooth!
