I love novels about mundane, “real” life problems — with an eerie, surreal twist to them. Latin American authors do that a lot.

“Nothing to See Here” is written by an American author, but it is, undoubtedly, such a story.

This book is about two unlikely friends that met in a dorm of an elite boarding school: Lillian who comes from a troubled, economically unsafe family, and Madison, a girl from a wealthy family who was always meant for a bright, wealthy future.

Because of a scandal involving Madison, Lillian has to leave the boarding school. Her only hope to break out of her family’s dire financial situation is scattered.

Lillian and Madison part ways for many years, until the moment when Madison reaches out to Lillian for help as her “only real friend”. The favor at hand is to take care of Madison’s step kids with a peculiar medical condition — they randomly set on fire when they get angry.

This is a beautifully written story about carrying a relationship/friendship over the years.

About motherhood and it’s different facets.

About the feeling of being accomplished in life.

About privilege and class.

Again, the books that explore universally valid life questions but pack them in quirky, magical type situations are my favorite.

“Nothing to See Here” is such a book. I promise you won’t regret reading it.

Beer of the day to go with today’s book is “First World Problems” Belgian IPA by an Edinburgh brewery Stewart Brewing. It’s a really good, flavorful IPA that I will be buying more of! Beer picture features cute, fluffy Christmas stockings we had this year:

I write book reviews, pair them with my favorite beers, and reflect on what the future brings.
