Perfect Book for Burnout: “There is No Such Thing as an Easy Job”
When I read this book by Kikuko Tsumura last winter, I was in the same headspace as its main protagonist, so perfect time perfect place:
The main character, a young woman, is burnt out. She quits her job, goes to an employment agency and asks for a job that would require very little thinking. Just an easy job.
She then goes through a series of very odd jobs (such as writing ads for a bus line). She seems to be unable to keep any of them, though:
Sometimes there are issues with the management or colleagues.
Sometimes the job tasks are not what she expected.
Every time, the protagonist ends up in extremely odd, surreal situations.
Without spoiling anything, in the end it turns out that those “easy” jobs are not so easy after all. Or maybe it is the main character’s personality and attitude to work that do not allow her to get an “easy” job.
If you have ever been through a burnout and if you like quirky, surreal literature, this book is for you.
The nature of work, why we work, the meaning of work are the things that really occupy my mind. I will be posting more of related books and thoughts here.
Beer of the day will be my very favorite: delicious Blue Moon 🌚 🍊
Give me a good book, give me a Blue Moon — I am happy. Burnout is magically cured.
